FHCP Statement on April 17 U.S. Surtax Remission Order

FHCP Statement on April 17 U.S. Surtax Remission Order

Author: Siobhan Juniku/April 18, 2025/Categories: Statement

Food, Health & Consumer Products of Canada (FHCP) welcomes the federal government’s decision to temporarily lift tariffs on key U.S. imports critical to Canadian manufacturing, packaging, and public health.

This six-month remission — in effect until October 16, 2025 — offers much-needed relief from recent surtaxes that raised costs and threatened supply chains. It helps ensure that essential goods manufactured in Canada — from packaged food to medical supplies — continue to reach Canadians without added cost pressure.

However, many everyday products are still subject to tariffs. The current order excludes most finished goods, even when no Canadian-made alternatives exist. These costs often end up falling on consumers.

FHCP continues to call for broader relief and a trade approach that doesn’t drive up costs for Canadian families.

Our priority remains the same: making sure Canadians have access to the affordable products they count on.

We’ll keep working with industry and government to push for wider tariff relief and a more stable, reliable trade relationship with the U.S.
